3 Books Promoting the use of AAC Devices

Let’s talk about augmentative & alternative communication (AAC)!

As a pediatric SLP, I really enjoy working with kids who use AAC devices, or helping kids attain their very own device. There are a lot of misconceptions about AAC. The number one concern I often hear from parents as a pediatric therapist is that AAC will hinder communication. Good news – this isn’t true! Better news – it’s actually the opposite. Research shows that AAC increases overall communication and can also help encourage verbal speech.

This is a completely typical part of my everyday life in my field. But it can be intimidating for those unfamiliar to the world of AAC. Learning a device is like learning another language. It takes time, dedication, and patience.

Recently my kids were watching an episode of a show while I was making dinner (because that happens in my house sometimes…) and they called me in to look at something.

In this episode, there was an older, non-speaking child with Autism – who was using AAC to communicate! I was thrilled to see this represented in a show for kids. My kids, on the other hand were…confused.

So what did I do? Paused the show and took an opportunity to explain how some people use an AAC device as their voice. I also pulled out my tablet with communication apps I use at work to let them see and they had so many questions!

I immediately went to look at what books I could find to add to our library on the subject of AAC. I want my kids to learn about accepting all forms of communication from their peers, and books are a great way to help support this!

Check out these 3 books we’ve found highlighting characters who use AAC. I’m excited to add more!

3 Books Promoting Use of AAC Devices

A Voice of Her Own
$8.99

"A must read for children with complex communication needs but also for all of us that need a little inspiration and courage to find our own voices."

This is a beautiful story about the journey of a 10-year-old girl with Cerebral Palsy who acquires a communication device and learns how to use it to communicate with others. I love that this story teaches about the significance of access to AAC and the profound effect it can have on someone's life.

Something to Say about My Communication Device
$12.99

Sometimes communication devices can be intimidating by people who aren't familiar with them. A communication device is somebody's voice, which is just as important as anybody else's voice! This book is a great way to introduce your child to the concept of what a communication device is, and how / why someone may use one.

Artie is Awesome (Artie's Adventures)
$10.00

A story that highlights the importance of accepting other's differences in a way that kids will relate to. (wouldn't it be so lame if we were all the same?)
