The Best Summer Books for Toddlers & Young Kids
Happy Summer, friends!
As both a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist and a mom of two energetic young kiddos, I know firsthand that summer *while magical in so many ways* can also throw families off balance. With routines out the window, travel and activities in full swing, and energy levels running high, it’s not uncommon for kids (and parents!) to feel a little more frazzled. Meltdowns happen, and the lack of structure can take its toll.
That’s why books are my go-to summer reset. Whether we’re snuggled up in a hammock, stretched out under a shady tree, or winding down after a splashy day at the pool, reading helps bring a sense of calm and connection back into our day.
Parents often ask me, “What books should I read with my child to support their speech and language skills?” So I’m sharing some of our absolute favorite summer reads ones that not only delight my kids (ages 3 and 5) but also build vocabulary, narrative skills, and sound awareness, all while keeping things fun and light.
So let’s get to it – here are my go-to summer picks (because we love a themed book list!)

This crocodile loves eating watermelon all day. But when he accidentally swallows a watermelon seed, he starts to freak out. Will he start growing vines or turn into a watermelon himself? In the middle of his panic, he burps the seed out. Relieved, he swears off watermelon forever..or does he?
We love this book! Definitely channeled Lola and her friends at the beach earlier today while attempting to build an epic sand castle. Lola goes to the beach determined to build the perfect sandcastle. Each time someone accidentally interrupts her she invites them to help. Watch how these friends rally and use teamwork when a wave comes and knocks the sandcastle down.
We love a good mermaid book in the summer and this one is so fun! Join these mermaids on “Mermaid Day,” when the mer‑queen gathers friends and ocean creatures for a party inside her glittering underwater castle.
We love this new release! Perfect end to the Changing Seasons series. Rhyming text with a gentle tone + prettiest illustrations! Follow a young girl as spring fades and summer blooms.
Check out this adorable, fun interactive board book by Rusty Finch, illustrated by Katya Longhi. Tailored for curious toddlers, it follows a mama bear and her playful cubs through a sun‑drenched day in the forest. My kids are 3 and 5 and we love these books!
